1,540,000nm Dye-Sensitised Solar Cell (DSSC) Synthesiser Workshop
This workshop involves creating a DIY dye-sensitised solar cell (DSSC) using natural/synthetic dye-sensitisation methods, and utilising the generated low-power electricity to build a sound-producing synthesiser.
A solar cell refers to a device where dye molecules adsorbed on its surface absorb sunlight, release electrons, and thereby generate electricity. It's said to be akin to creating a semiconductor.
Two DSSC glass cells, each measuring 3x3cm, are arranged maintaining a distance of 1.54mm or 1,540,000nm between them, ensuring they do not touch, to collect the current. Hence, the workshop title is likely β1,540,000 Nanometre DSSCβ.
Output: A 3x3cm DSSC-powered synthesiser
11:00 - 11:30 Introductions and DSSC project overview
11:30 - 12:30 Electrode preparation
12:30 - 13:00 Extract dye from fruit, dip electrodes in dye
13:30 - 14:30 Lunch break and juice tasting
14:30 - 16:30 Install Neutone on MAX/MSP, solder Starvation PCB, run Arduino-based programme
16:30 - 17:00 Cell assembly and sound experimentation
𧽠Date: Saturday, 19 July 2025, 11:00 - 17:00
𧽠Language: English and Korean mixed, consecutive interpretation provided as needed
! Abao suggested we could also try making natural dyeing on glass cells together. We'll need to wait for the dyeing process.
! Though it's 6 hours, let's run the workshop loosely like a camp. Think of it as coming to play.
! Please bring your own packed lunch.
! Even if you're unfamiliar with the software or equipment, if you're interested, please apply first. Apply first, think later.
! The research on dye-sensitised DIY solar cells (DSSC) has been carried out over a long period with the support of A-Bao and the autonomous grassroots networks Hackteria and KUBU.
π Introducing the person
Abao's real name is Shih Wei-Chieh. He is an artist and researcher spanning traditional crafts to nanotechnology, working in electronic textiles, dye-sensitised solar cells, and DIY laser systems. He is currently pursuing a PhD in the Interdisciplinary Arts Programme at the Graduate School of Applied Arts, National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University.
